Details

More than twelve years of meticulous archival research have shed new light on the main characters of this story; the documentation of several hundred instruments from the most important international collections has been made possible by our networking and international co-operation; the most modern research methods like dendrochronology, micro-CT imaging and varnish diagnostics have been used to reveal the construction techniques down to the smallest detail.

The first volume ( 2024) presents the violin makers who were active from around 1680 to 1750 - from Pietro Guarneri to Camillo Camilli. The second Volume ( 2025) represents the period from 1750 to 1850 and features works by Tomasso Balestrieri, Pietro Barbieri, Pietro Castellani, Giuseppe Ceruti, Sante Coppi, Gaetano Dionelli, Giuseppe dall'Àglio, Giovanni Rota and Alessandro Zanti.

Photographs by Jan Röhrmann, historical and archival research by Philip J. Kass and an examination of the making techniques and style by Rudolf Hopfner and Andrea Zanrè.
