“The Baron Knoop, Fulton Stradivari Violin“, ex Bevan from 1715, printed 2024
Treasures of Italian Violin Making - folder I
This is a new series of folders that will become an irreplaceable working tool for violin makers. Thanks to the original size of the photos and the macro photography in visible and UV light, some of the most important instruments in the history of Italian violin making can be admired. Rudolf Hopfner's studies, carried out using micro-CT technology, make it possible to analyse the shapes, curvatures, thicknesses and internal construction techniques used. The stylistic details, such as the sculpting of the scrolls and the cutting of the F-holes with a resolution of the order of a tenth of a millimetre, can thus be viewed from a new perspective. The collaboration with the Arvedi laboratories for non-invasive diagnostics has enabled us to deepen our analyses of the composition of the lacquers and materials used by the greatest masters of the past.
The first folder in this new series of "Treasures" is dedicated to one of Antonio Stradivari's most admired instruments, built in 1715 at the height of his "golden period". Having been the favourite Stradivarius of one of the greatest collectors in history, Baron Johann Knoop, this violin has the same significance today for David Fulton, who wrote of its sound: "Perhaps some are as good, perhaps some have remarkable personalities, but none is better " than the Baron Knoop.
